TOURNAMENT FORMAT

FIRST GAME

First pairings will be random (avoiding same-country matches).

SECOND TO TWENTIETH GAMES

The au pair program matches players with the closest available player to their ranking in the results after each game. However, repeats of matches may occur from game NINE, and game SEVENTEEN. Players will not meet twice in one day. The maximum number of matches against the same opponent is three – these are more likely at the very top and bottom of the field.

FINAL PLAYOFF

The players positioned first and second at the end of game 20 will play the best of five games, to determine overall winner. In the case of a tied result, margins will be used.

GIBSON RULE

If, during the first 20 games, one player reaches the situation where, even if they lose all remaining games, they cannot lose the number one field position, the “Gibson rule” applies. They will be paired with the top-positioned player (not a fellow countryman) who, in the Tournament Director’s opinion, is most likely not to finish in the top 25. If the top two players are clear of the field, they will be paired against each other for the final round/s. (The purpose of this rule is to remove the temptation to lose to a friend)

CHALLENGES

The dictionary for this event is SOWPODS, or Official Scrabble Words International.

For the main tournament (20 games) there is no penalty for challenging. However, for the FINAL PLAY-OFF ONLY (best of five games, top two players), there IS A CHALLENGE PENALTY of five points per move, awarded to the player, if a move is correct.

A SPECIAL CHALLENGE RULE applies, to compensate for confusion caused by different dictionaries used in some countries (“NA” means allowable word list from North America”)

“If one or more words are allowed in SOWPODS, and the remaining word/s are allowed in NA, but not in SOWPODS, then the move may be replayed. Players may make as many attempts as needed, as long as the only invalid words in each move are NA plays."
