WESPA

World English-Language Scrabble® Players' Association

www.Wespa.org

In November 2003, players from throughout the world met at the World Scrabble Championship in Kuala Lumpur - with the goal of forming an organisation whose role it would be to unify all countries in their pursuit of competitive Scrabble, played in English. After a year of planning, the constitution was approved in London in November 2005, and WESPA (World English-language Scrabble Players Association) was born. WESPA has appointed sub-committees to handle the various areas where a unified approach will benefit Scrabble players throughout the world - eg approving and scheduling international tournaments, establishing an international rating system, formulating a set of rules for use at international events, monitoring and influencing world dictionary developments.

Most countries have expressed a desire for the involvement of more young players in the Scrabble scene. Young people are the future of our game, and Scrabble is known to be an exciting and challenging activity for all ages. One obvious way to attract more young players is to give them something to strive for, something just for them - hence the concept of a World Youth Scrabble Championship. It is hoped that each country will publicise the inclusion of their representatives in this prestigious event, and thereby highlight for all youth in the community, just how enjoyable and rewarding Scrabble can be. Furthermore, it is expected that the existence of WYSC will encourage national Scrabble Associations to recruit and train more young players to defend their national honour.

The YOUTH SUB-COMMITTEE of WESPA consists of Karen Richards (Australia) - Chair, Jason Katz-Brown (USA), Radhika Mahalingaiah (India), Rohaina Tanveer (Kuwait), Chrys Placca (Ghana), Ruth Groffman (NZ), Shaila Amalean (Sri Lanka), (Henry) Yeo Kien Hung (Malaysia), (Mrs Yap) Song Kim Lian (Malaysia)

Because WESPA is less than a year old, resources are not yet available to run this event completely unaided. Hence we are relying on the support of CASPA (Council of Australian Scrabble Players Associations) for use of their infrastructure - equipment, expertise, software, website etc. It is hoped that, next time this event is planned, membership and organisation of WESPA will be sufficiently strong to enable this event to be run entirely by WESPA.
