TOKAI - Sponsors of the 2007 World Youth Scrabble Championships

Only a few weeks ago, I directed the World Scrabble Championship (my fourth). There I witnessed the prowess of players like Suanne and Benjamin, winning against seasoned adult competitors. Whilst it is obvious that young players revel in matching wits against older opponents, there is something special about this event, which allows them to interact exclusively with their peers. At the inaugural WYSC last year, I observed the camaraderie which existed between the young players after only a few days. Friendships formed then have flourished via the internet, and you will be keen to reconnect with those who played last year, as well as making new friends from all corners of the earth.

I lecture in Educational Psychology, and have a special interest in gifted students. Hence I can relate to your common love (or obsession with) Scrabble, a game that provides you with the opportunity to sharpen your thinking skills and continually challenge yourselves. These are important life-skills.

My role is to ensure the tournament runs smoothly, that everyone is treated fairly, and that you leave here with a burning desire to represent your country again next year – or at least, wanting to inspire younger players to compete in future. That means I need you to call me if you are unsure of anything, particularly rules issues, as soon as a query arises. Don’t wait until it is too late to fix any problem.

Play well, learn from your experience, and most importantly, enjoy yourselves.
